Profile of the Hon Ian Callinan AC
The Hon. Ian Callinan AC QC is a Retired Justice of the High Court of Australia.
He was appointed a Queen's Counsel (QC) in 1978 and served as President of the Queensland Bar Association from 1984 to 1987 and of the Australian Bar Association from 1984 to 1985.
He served as a Justice of the High Court of Australia from 1998 to 2007.
Immediately following his retirement from the High Court, he was appointed to conduct a Commission of Inquiry into the outbreak of equine influenza in Australia.
In 2012, he was appointed by the Queensland Attorney-General to conduct a review of the Crime and Misconduct Commission, and in 2013 released a commissioned report on the state of the parole system in Victoria.
In 2014, he was appointed Chairman of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia's Independent Review Panel for its Open Advice Review Program.
Justice Callinan was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in 2003 for his services to the law, arts and the community, and received the Centenary Medal in 2001 for his service as a Justice of the High Court of Australia.
He holds a Bachelor of Laws and an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Queensland.
